Think Global, Speak Local

10:30 AM - 11:45 AM: Session 1

In this workshop we will build understanding across differences by engaging participants in playful Ojibwe language learning. Through interaction with Ojibwe Elders and language activists, we invite participants to learn a little of the language of this place. Learning with movement, games and songs, we promise that even the shyest language learners will be laughing and engaged. The session will culminate in a debriefing and short Q&A about Ojibwe language revitalization, raising participants' awareness of one of the two indigenous languages of Minnesota and engaging participants in thinking about the historical and continuing impacts of colonization. Participants will take back frequently used Ojibwe phrases to their own communities along with an understanding of how their work might intersect with the work of indigenous language revitalization.
