Mary (Fong) Hermes

Mary (Fong) Hermes is a mixed heritage native person with 20 years of experience in revitalizing indigenous languages. She is a co-founder of the Waadookodaading Ojibwe Language Immersion School at Lac Courte Oreilles as well as director of the nonprofit Grassroots Indigenous Multimedia. She holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction and is currently associate professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the Culture and Teaching (CAT) and Second Languages and Cultures (SLC) programs within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her research interests include improving the effectiveness of Ojibwe language teaching and learning; culture and identity in education; the intersection of oppressions (race, class, gender); critical theory and critical thinking; and theory into practice.
